The Cottage At Te Mata House
Warm up beside the gas fire, enjoy a home-cooked meal at the dining table, or sip wine in the secluded walled courtyard at our luxurious holiday home. With lavish views of the vineyard and garden, you are sure to have the most peaceful experience.
This one-level cottage has a gas fireplace in the living room, an open dining room, and a fully equipped kitchen. It also has a private backyard with a cedar hot tub and a Baby Weber BBQ. The fully equipped kitchen includes a fridge, freezer, toaster, kettle, Miele induction stovetop, and Miele microwave oven.
The Cottage is the perfect spot for a romantic getaway, a girls’ weekend, or a family holiday. It can comfortably accommodate up to 4 people. A roll-away bed and cot are available at an extra cost.
The master bedroom features a Super King bed with double wardrobes. The master ensuite includes a shower, dual vanity, and toilet. The second bedroom has a Super King bed with a single wardrobe. There is a shared bathroom that includes a shower, single vanity, and toilet. All bathrooms have natural toiletries, hairdryers, rain shower heads, underfloor heating, and heated towel rails.

Our comfortable beds are topped with crisp cotton sheets and high-quality down duvets—a joy to slide into at the end of a busy day. In the bathroom and kitchen, you’ll find local body care brand Real World, who batch-make our shower gel, body lotion, handwash, dishwashing liquid, and laundry liquid in Hastings. Real World’s plant-based range is toxin-free, chemical-free, and beautiful to use.
Pool
Our 18m pool is elevated to catch the sun but well sheltered from the wind. Rinse off under the outdoor shower, collapse into our luxury loungers and relax with a Nespresso coffee. The pool and pool house are available to guests from 10am to 4pm daily or at the owner’s discretion, with complimentary access to tea, coffee and filtered mineral water in our kitchenette. Please be aware the pool may be communal or occasionally closed for private events.
Tennis Court
Our full-sized floodlit turf court is quiet, sheltered, and uniquely positioned. Adjacent to grape vines on one side and a charming lavender field on the other, what better location to perfect your backhand? Enjoy access to our court at any time during your stay, with rackets and balls available for your use. If you’d like a tennis lesson, please enquire on arrival.
Bikes
Grab one of our townie bikes, available exclusively for guests, and pedal out the gates to explore our incredible region. Hawke’s Bay is renowned for its well-maintained network of flat, safe bike trails, leading to interesting vineyards, villages, restaurants, and rivers. Hawke’s Bay and Napier are full of wonderful bike trails for you to choose from.
School House
The original Chambers family’s schoolhouse has been lovingly converted into a whimsical children’s art room. Packed full of dress-ups, play dough, pens, paints, and a chalkboard to scribble on, your children are free to entertain themselves and unleash their creativity. You might even take home an original work or two.
Treehouse
Climb, clamber, explore, and imagine! The treehouse of every child’s dreams exists right here at Te Mata House. Featuring interconnecting platforms, ropes, nets, ladders, a flying fox, and a trampoline. Wildlings will love this play area nestled under established trees. Please note that adult supervision is required at all times.
Garden Games
Our selection of solidly constructed outdoor games is made locally wherever possible. They are a great way to connect and unwind with family or friends. Choose a set, find a worthy opponent and head down to the lawn. All instructions are included and bragging rights assured!
Outdoor
We’ve made it simple to enjoy the many picturesque spots dotted around our heritage property. Grab the picnic rug in your room, a glass of wine and pick your favourite spot. Choose from the sprawling oak tree or overlook the serene arena.
Getting to Te Mata House
Hawke’s Bay is situated on the east coast of the North Island, around a six-hour drive from Auckland. The nearest airport for domestic and international air transfers is Auckland Airport, while the local Napier Airport offers connections to Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch.
Our luxury accommodation is a 25-minute drive from Napier Airport.
Guests who drive can expect a six-hour road trip from Auckland, a four-hour drive from Wellington, or a three-and-a-half-hour drive from Rotorua.

“What a jewel! We LOVED staying at the adorable Cottage at Te Mata House. It is perfectly tucked into a stunning historic area that boasts an original 1850s home, lavender fields, a beautiful swimming pool, gym, hot tub and pastures filled with horses, 4 friendly sheep and a gorgeous pig named Delila. One of the best parts of our stay was petting and feeding the critters. Innkeeper Jacquie is SO in touch with providing every amenity--from tasty breakfast food in the kitchen, a bottle of wine, bicycles, the newest appliances, a cedar hot tub, and cozy, comfortable linens and towels. My husband and I even photographed the cottage so we can copy some of the architectural designs if we ever build our own little getaway in the States. Great location close to Napier, North Havelock, wineries, the beach, etc, etc!”

“Staying at Te Mata House was an absolute highlight of our honeymoon not only because of the beautiful surrounding area, but also because the accommodations and grounds were so welcoming and relaxing. At Te Mata House, we were so close to many of Hawkes Bay's highlights: Craggy Range, Black Barn, Te Mata Peak, and even coastal attractions just a manageable bike trail away (bikes are provided). That said, sometimes it was hard to leave the property with the well-stocked kitchen, pool, tennis court, picnic locations, and even Delilah the friendly pig on site (fenced in). Lastly, while the hosts, Jacqueline and family, are on-site, their house is independent and disconnected from our guest house, so a stay at Te Mata House really does feel like a luxury, private farm stay experience.
Everything at Te Mata House is so perfectly considered and executed, and Jacqueline and family could not have been warmer and more welcoming. We would be thrilled to stay here again.”

“Te Mata House is the perfect property in Hawkes Bay. It is conveniently located to several wineries and restaurants (Te Mata, Craggy Range, Blackbarn, etc) and beautifully kept. Jacqueline is a 5-star host and was even able to accommodate us on extremely short notice. The cottage fits 4 guests comfortably, with two full-sized bedrooms and a cozy living room, kitchen, and backyard patio that includes a hot tub. The beds are extremely comfortable and the cottage is perfectly decorated and organized. The property itself is on a gorgeous farm with the most beautiful animals. The entire landscape is just gorgeous and perfectly kept!”
